The beautiful craft used for horse equipment has always facinated me. A utilitarian object turned into a work of art. One of my favorites is the Oriental stirrup. The stirrup can pivot at the point where it attaches to the stirrup leather. Way ahead of its time.
I find the Balkan spur stirrup most interesting...instead of the boot, the stirrup wore the spur. It seems that the ankle-foot and lower-leg position would require significant change if one used these.

I added a picture of the type of saddle the Japanese stirrups would have been used on. Also added a picture of well used Edo stirrups.
