Very rare painting of a female rider in a male position! Only somebody like Tsarina Catherina the Great could allow herself to do so in those times ;-)
I find it interesting too, that in both portraits of Catherine & Marie Antoinette riding astride, they are painted from the off side -- this is the side on which a gentleman carries his sword, is it not? Obviously, if riding side saddle, the view from the near side is more elegant.
