  2. Yes, der Isabella was magnificent.

Andreas, did they film 2 different quadrilles for that New Year concert? It looked like you were riding in the #6 position in the first section of the film and # 7 later. Was it Narenta that you rode?

  4. Izzi was a real corker wasn''t he. Many moons ago on my second visit to the SRS you brought him out on the long rein and I sat there enthralled. Maybe, just maybe, the video that I shot....naughty me....you could now edit and somehow download here....his piaffe you controlled so beautifully at the pillars.

  6. "Izzi" was not just an outstanding stallion, but a good friend. He helped me to become a Bereiter.

  7. I think that 'friendship' is visible between you and C. Isabella. It is a wonderful thing to see!

  8. The relationship between them was always visible; even back when Andreas was an Assistant Rider! I first saw Isabella in the Quadrille back in September 1992 shortly before Andreas was promoted to Rider. In my journal from that trip, I made a note about Andreas and Isabella: "The young rider we thought sat like Kottas is called Andreas Hausberger. He was the only Assistant Rider in the Quadrille or we wouldn’t know his name. His stallion, Conversano Isabella, looks like a good one. A good pair!"

I later learned that Andreas was Kottas' student so it seemed natural that he had a similar style in the saddle.

I never got to see Isabella doing levade in hand but I did see him in performance on the long rein in 1997. My notes from that trip: "This was so good I can hardly believe it. Bereiter Hausberger and Conversano Isabella did an astounding job." Actually, it was so good that I wrote a letter to Herr Director Dr Oulehla and praised them!

I think that one of the things that made Isabella so great on the long rein was his suppleness! He always seemed to be correctly bent regardless of whether he was doing a double canter pirouette, a half pass or a shoulder-in. That's remarkable on the long rein!

We saw Isabella again in September 2001 when he was coming back from a tendon injury Andreas worked him in long rein during morning training. C. Dagmar was already doing performances but I recognized Isabella immediately! I remember thinking how good it was to see them together again... There was always some "chemistry" between them...

  11. Well, it was truly a hard time for me. We spent his last two days in hospital together.
It was heart breaking seeing Izzi getting weaker and weaker. He had stomach cancer. I will never forget the moment saying good buy.........
Nobody filled his place in my heart.......

  12. Tears are running down my cheeks as I write this. Such heartbreak and loss. The greatest act of love for our friends is to be with them at the end, though it rips our hearts to shreds.
    Hugs and kisses for you

  13. the simplicity of your phrase "Izzy was not just an outstanding stallion, but a good friend.." contains more than words can say--the poignancy of your loss comes through.

These beings occupy such a huge part of our hearts--that when they go-- they leave a void that aches so sharply, it can cause physical pain

But what a gift they brought us when they were with us! And perhaps there is one comfort in that even though they are no longer with us, we can go on loving them in the same way as when they were alive.

It is that love that causes the pain in the heart but it is also that same love that sustains the memories of the moments we shared with them.

  14. This is a quotation, way back from 1998 in the book "Visions of Dressage" by Elizabeth Furth. It is a neat little interview with Andreas.

I applied three years in a row to join but, unfortunately there was never a place available. I had almost given up hope when out of the blue I was asked to come for an interview. I rode infront of a panel and to my delight I was accepted. My childhood dream had finally come true. However the training at the school is very tough. I remember riding with bruised and sore knees for a whole year. To succeed one has to be very strong mentally. Like in every walk of life, there are moments when obstacles seem impassable.

As apprentices we are all given young stallions to bring on to Grand Prix level. Conversano Isabella was entrusted to me as a three and a half year old. We grew together and know each other inside out! When he was four I rode him in the young stallions section. Then he went into the Quadrille for three years. When he was familiar with all the movements we tried long-reining him. He showed a great talent and all the right characteristics for the job. Conversano Isabella is very intelligent. He has a very sensitive mouth, is extremely alert and listens to my voice. However he can be mischievous at times! When he is a bit too fresh I usually ride him before the performance and then he is as good as gold. Although we both started off as inexperienced and green individuals, it was thanks to my work with Conversano Isabella that I became a Berieter in 1993. The work with horses is so fascinating ! I am stil overwhelmed every time I enter our riding school in Vienna! I would describe my work as a dream job.

Andreas, you rapidly approach your 25th Anniversary as a member of the most prestigious riding school in the world. Thank you for your wit, wisdom, humility and constant recognition of those two special stallions Izzi and Dagi who took you from Eleve to Anwaerter, then Bereiter to Oberbereiter in 2007. Long may you rein dear friend.....!!!

  15. ......you know, talking about Izzi brings back all the good memories and joy I had with him. I remember a performance in Globen Arena - Stockholm. The arena was sold out with 18.000 people. It was bitch dark. Izzi and I performed in the spotlight. After we finished the one-tempis between the pilars 18.000 people freaked out.....
It was one of our first performances on Long Rein abroad......
Izzi was afraid for a moment then turned his ears back and listened to me......
I told him: Izzi everything is ok!
    .....then he started Passage
You know, when good friends trust each other.......
