"Mohrenkopf" (Roan)

The color of this horse (Noriker) is "Mohrenkopf", an old austrian expression. Lipizzans had that color as well ("Brood mares in Lipica" Hamilton)!

  1. This is a lovely color. The horse will remain so for its whole life?

At what point in history did the grey(white) Lipizzaner become favored and bred for that color specifically? Was there a certain reason governing the decision?

  2. Classic or true roan is always present at birth, though it may be hard to see until after the foal coat sheds out. The summer coat may be lighter in the summer, but unlike grays, true roans do not progressively lighten. While the head of a true roan, barring any white markings, remains solid throughout its life, the first indication of "graying out" is often observed around the eyes and muzzle of foals.

  4. Rorella, indeed a Lipizzaner with such a color would be something... ;-)

According to that recent foal in Holland, which you mentioned, I suppose you meant "Presciana", born 3 days ago (s. Maestoso X Mahonia). I do agree that her color in her first hours looked rather similar with a "Mohrenkopf", but also her neck was dark. So, no, it is not a "Mohrenkopf" from the genetic perspective.

And what about that piebald (Schecke) foal in Germany? A look-a-like, with a lot of white (under the belly f.e.- which might be another genetic factor than piebald!) or really a revolutionary surprise of Mother Nature?

Please do tell us, Rorella !
