Chrysaor

Chrysaor (Golden Sword) is a hard myth to research. Not as much information as about his brother, Pegasus. He is described as either a giant, a winged boar or a great warrior.

Hesiod, Theogony 280 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) :
"But when Perseus had cut off the head of Medousa there sprang from her blood great Khrysaor and the horse Pegasos . . . while Khrysaor is named for the golden 'aor', the sword he handles."

“As Medousa was slain [by Perseus], the neck was delivered of its twin birth, the Horse [Pegasos] and the Boy [Khrysaor] with the golden sword"

Loving warriors as I do, that is the image of Chrysaor I prefer. ;-)

30 years anniversary Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre - Lisbon

This year the sister institute for classical dressage of the SRS, the Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre exists 30 years.

Once founded in the 2nd half of the 18th century as "Picaria Real" of the Portuguese royal court, and located in the magnificent baroque riding hall of Belem (Lisbon), the
Picadeiro Real de Belém (nowadays the Coach Museum). Founded by King Joao V, who was married to a daughter of.... Austrian Emperor Karl VI (yes, the same one whose painting is always saluted by Andreas c.s. in Vienna)

As so many comparable institutions, the royal ridingschool disappeared in later, revolutionary times. But was refounded in 1979 by Dr. Guilherme Borba and the present director, Dr. Felipe Figueiredo, Marquis de Graciosa (a.k.a. Felipe Graciosa). Both were students of the famous Portuguese ridingmaster Nuno Oliveira.

Of course there are some relations with Vienna: in the beginning 80-ies Dr.Guilherme Borba, Dr. Felipe Graciosa, and Joao Pedro Rodrigues (present 1st Oberbereiter) stayed in the Spanish Ridingschool for some time, and were trained by Mr. Kottas and Riegler.
In November 2007 both institutions met in Paris, in a combined program, also with Saumur and Jerez (Les Quatre Ecoles)

The Portuguese ridingschool is exclusively using brown stallions of the former royal stud at Alter, "Alter Real" (founded 1748). This stud and his breeding material has a comparable breeding history as the Lipizzaner!   At this moment the school has more than 60 stallions in training, with 17 riders. The stables and (only outdoor!) training arena is located in the palace garden of the baroque Queluz-palace, the Portuguese version of Schönbrunn (only in pink...)

In the summer season, every Thursday morning a show is offered in the palace gardens. The schedule of the show program is comparable with the performance of the SRS.

A great wish of the institution (and Felipe Graciosa personally) is the use the baroque riding hall of Belem again. There are far going plans to realize this !

Recently a very nice video appeared on You Tube, which offers a good impression! Beside this, a very nice new picture gallery can be found on www.dressageportugal.pt

The official website of the school can be found here: EPAE

The website of the Alter stud is:  AR

A very nice picture gallery of the stud can be found here: dressageportugal.pt

Stupid !!!

Sometimes things don't have to have a point - they just have to make you smile.

And these images of horses with hair extensions do just that.

Jockeying for position to be best-in-show, it was up to award winning advertising photographer Julian Wolkenstein to keep the supermodels of the equine world in check.

Well, we figured out pretty quickly on a test day that it was a major undertaking.

Apart from casting horses and preparation work which took a few months, each horse took a full day to shoot.

Even for a seasoned pro, such as Julian, there were hitches to his horse hair project.

I tend to be drawn to projects where just in trying to describe and trying to explain the concept to all the crew and the people who supplied the horses was fascinating , says Julian.

Most of the time you could see the cogwheels of the mind trying to work it out, trying to visualise it in their own minds, then, a bit of a smile, a chuckle and then the inevitable question - why?

Of course, sometimes - as these pictures show - it's better to live life by asking, why not?

"Tigerschecke" (Leopard)

Also seen on Hamiltons painting "Brood-mares in Lipica".
Coat patterns in the leopard complex range from being hardly distinguishable from an unaffected coat, to nearly pure white. Unlike most other spotting patterns, the spotting and especially the white regions associated with the leopard complex tend to be symmetrical and originate over the hips. Furthermore, a certain amount of this inherited white patterning is present at birth. The amount of white, even if none is present at birth, often grows throughout the horse's life by gradual "roaning" which is not related to graying or true roan. Colored spots reflect the underlying coat color, be it black, chestnut, gray, or silver dun-buckskin. A number of factors, each separately, genetically controlled, interact to produce familiar patterns such as "snowflake," "leopard," and "fewspot".

Amazing! Isn't it?

Gypsy foal

Have you ever seen anything like this? This is a newborn offspring of Taskin, Gypsy Stallion owned by Villa Vanners that was born in Oregon.

These pictures were taken immediately after his birth on April 6. . .the mare laid down and then he trotted around and crawled right up into her lap.

"Mohrenkopf" (Roan)

The color of this horse (Noriker) is "Mohrenkopf", an old austrian expression. Lipizzans had that color as well ("Brood mares in Lipica" Hamilton)!

Official uniforms of a Oberbereiter in imperial times

Something serious now:

Please find two official uniforms of a Oberbereiter of the Spanish Ridingschool in ancient, imperial times, which they were supposed to wear outside the school in the 19th century (up till 1918)

Left the brown so-called campagne-uniform (daily common uniform)
(Not in use anymore)

And secondly the red gala-uniform, which inspired the costume makers of the Walt Disney-movie.  (Still the official uniform if a Oberbereiter in case he should represent the school under Gala-circumstances outside the school!)

Both these uniforms belonged to the famous Oberbereiter and leader of the SHS, Johann Meixner (died in 1916). They are now in the collection of the "Montur-depot", part of the Wagenburg-museum beside Schönbrunn palace.

Link for more: KHM

Question from me to Andreas:  are those red uniforms really still available for you, if you would like to visit -let's say- the Opernball ?

New restaurant in Vienna

Look what I found! It is a recent picture, from March 2009!  Andreas did not tell us!

I am curious what the menu brings. As a starter Suppa Capriola? Followed by Steak Piber with Lipizzaner knödel? Definitely ended with a piece of Sacher Torte ?   And a Wiener Melange.

Herr Oberbereiter! Two white wine please!  (Yes, Conversano Dagmar, of course...what else?)

Kaiser Franz Josef und Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich

Obwohl es wie ein Foto aussieht, handelt es sich um eine Colage, denn die Kaiserin ließ sich in diesem Alter nicht mehr fotografieren!

Although it looks like a photo, it is more like a Colage, because the empress did not let herself be photographed any more at this age!

Haflinger

Oh, she makes my heart sing! Isn't she beautiful?

Bana Studfarm, Hungary

It set me off, yet again to see if I could find internet reference to the disbanded Bana Stud in Hungary where Ragyogo1's dam was rescued from & brought to the UK &/or more information other than her pedigree blood line chart from her Studbook ,,, & much to my suprise - I did - http://www.hedstrandslipizzaner.com/13.html

12(2436) BANA SIGLAVY-9

2356 Conversano Rita is Ragyogo1's G. G .dam - 1300 Siglavy Capriola VIII-7 is her grand sire on her dams side - I've noted other connections.

If anyone has links &/or information about the closed Bana Stud in Hungary, I'd be most interested to learn more about it.

Riding School - Philips Wouwerman

A scene from a riding school, during the Cavalier period (note the dress of the riders). Wouwerman was a prolific Dutch painter who was known for his equestrian scenes.

The stallions arrived yesterday at 11 a.m.
It was a successful tour.

Jumps

Some friends and I were discussing the 'airs above the ground' , but found we could not agree on some things.

Which jumps are hardest for a school horse to do and why?  Also, which jumps are hardest for a rider to do?

"Von der Koppel bis zur Capriole"

First time in history the Spanish Riding School has a second team performing in Vienna while the other team is on tour!
The performances in Vienna are called "Von der Koppel bis zur Capriole"!
