Klavdij Maver and his F. Dubovina. I am pretty convinced this is F. Dubovina IV, born in Piber in 1964. I plan to ask Klavdij next time I meet him to confirm.
Well, for sure F. Dubovina IV was intensively used in breeding in Lipica. I was absolutely sure about this being him till Today, when I found under some other photo of Klavdij that Atjan has different opinion. As I said, I will ask Klavdij when I meet him again. This might take time, as I usually do meet him by coincidence in Lipica...
But according to Lipizzan Registry, F. Alea III, year 1981 and F. Alea II, year 1980 are both sired by F. Dubovina IV. So I guess this is the right one...?
Of course it's possible that there is a mistake in the registry, or that I have wrong info. Now I'm more and more curious!
I'm sure you are right and just we in the SRS used to call him F. Dubovina I. It's a but confusing, I know :-) Atjan, who reads the blogs frequently, might help ....
Why would one horse be named differently? Though knowing some stories about our stud book keeping, anything is possible... Looking forward to hear from Atjan :))
NO! You are talking about 2 complete different Favory-stallions, who happened to have the same name!!
Klavdij Maver's top stallion (this picture) was 330 Favory Dubovina II, born in Lipica in 1959. He was a grandson of the stallion Favory Sistina (born in Hostau in 1945) which was granted to Lipica as a colt in 1946. The sire of F.Sistina was the Piber-stallion F. VIII Africa. This rare side-branch of Favory does not exist anymore, unfortunately! F.Dubovina II was used for breeding in Lipica, but his progeny was too "old-fashioned"/baroque for the demands in Lipica in the '80-ies. The breeding goal then was a more modern typed Lipizzaner for dressage sports. His last son (an impressive stallion) was sold to Lipik in 1984, and died (probably during the bombing...) Here this line ends.
321 Favory Dubovina-4 (aka F.Dubovina I in the SRS) was born in Piber in 1964. He was a son of Favory XI Bora, which came out of the branch of F.VII Ancona. 321 Favory Dubovina-4 had 3 sons in the SRS. Two full brothers: the brown F.Alea II (ridden by OB Kottas, and later by Jochen Rothleitner) and the grey F.Alea III (ridden by OB Eder). His 3rd son was Favory Sava, who was the sire of Andreas' Favory Dagmar and Director Bachinger's Favory Amabila
321 Favory Dubovina-4 was also used in the Hungarian state stud of Szilvasvarad (renamed into Favory XXV) and in Lipica (here mistakenly registered as Favory Dubovina IV in stead of Favory Dubovina-4). His offspring in both studs was very good. His best performing son is the famous Favory Allegra XXVI. This stallion is the sire of Igor Maver's (son of Klavdij) GP-stallion Favory Canissa (which was offered to Queen Elisabeth). Favory Allegra XXVI is in Piber now to be used right this mating season as a breeding stallion! With this the old blood of 321 Favory Dubovina-4 returns directly in Piber in 2011.
So the branches of the Favory-dynasty of both stallions Favory Dubovina II and 321 Favory Dubovina-4 are quite different, but both originating from Piber, joining in the common ancestor Favory VI Gratiosa (Laxenburg 1915) On the dam-side however, they were closer related. The dam of F.Dubovina-4 was the aunt of the dam of F.Dubovina II.
And to increase the confusion: as you might know, at this moment Andreas also rides a Favory Dubovina (Piber, 1997)!
The interesting fact is that this Favory-branche is really miles away from the both mentioned above! He is a son of Favory Alea I (the famous solo-stallion of OB Kottas) and grandson of Favory X Kitty. This Favory-line and the combined line of both the other stallions above are joining in ...... 1829 !! With the stallion Favory Ratisbona II (Imperial Lippiza, 1829)
At the mother's side however, there is some more narrow relationship again! The dam of Andreas' present Favory Dubovina was born in Lipica. And was a grand-niece of the dam of F.Dubovina II of Klavdij Maver ;-)
Off topic.....: Andreas, it would be really nice if you once could perform the solo with your F.Dubovina !! A worthy successor for OB Kottas with his F.Alea! Teacher-Pupil and Father-Son, coming together in the next generation ;-)
First of all, many many thanks for this enormous explanation!! I'm grateful to you for clarifying the confusion about above stallion! And yes, I'm still with you (I admit, I needed to read your post twice) :))
I am fully aware I'm not the first one saying this, but You sir, you should definitely write a book! I'm also convinced you posess enough knowledge that you could wirte not only one, but the whole collection of books!!! There is so much info in your posts here at H&D that one simply cannot find in commonly accesible books! This should have been published for sure.
My curiosity goes further on now. Knowing some sad facts of our stud book keeping in Slovenia (which we cannot be proud of), I can to some extent understand the mix with the number behind the name of the stallion being wrongly changed from arabic to roman, but why the different name from Piber to SRS and why this hungarian complete change of the name? And sub-question: what's the naming rule in Hungary? it is different than elsewhere and I never came across the naming rule there.
Igor Maver's 085 Favory Canissa XXII has since January last year been ridden by Ursa Vadnjal. Igor got a very bad injury at work, where one of the stallions jumped on him broke his hip bone. After some complications I believe he now has an artificial hip (since december) and is recovering. We all hope he could ride again and he could return to work ASAP!!
This is the same question, which can be answered in one!
In the former Austro-Hungarian/Habsburg empire several large state studfarms were founded since 1785, which were supposed to be the deliverer of horses for all state purposes (military, transportation, improving breeding): Mezöhegyes, Bábolna, Radautz, Piber, Kisber, Fogaras. All kind of breeds were bred or even developed there, including Lipizzaner. Due to the immense amounts of breeding stock (sometimes more than 5.000 species in one studfarm!), they developed an ingenious system for naming, or better: registering their horses, which was (and still is) used for all those breeds, including the Lipizzaner. Nowadays this system is used in Szilvasvarad (H), Sambata de Jos and Beclean (RO) and partly in Topolcianky (SK). Piber used it until around 1930 for mares, for stallions even until around 1988.
The principal: All male dynasties lead back to a founding stallion, which give name for the registering. Every breeding stallion of a specific dynasty is registered in the sub-register of that tribe, with a following Roman numeral. For example: for the Favory-line, the register of the Hungarian branch starts with a Favory stallion, born in Piber in 1856. He was registered with name Favory I in the former Hungarian Lipizzaner stud Fogaras. The 2nd Favory in this register was Favory Alena, born in Lippiza in 1872. He was registered in Fogaras as Favory II. The 4th Favory stallion in this register was a son of Favory I, born in Fogaras in 1874 - his name became... you already guessed..... Favory IV. Etcetera.
All progeny of every stallion, regardless male or female, will be "named" after their sire, with additional figures: All children of Favory VII got his name, and a following number. His first foal Favory VII-1, his 2nd foal Favory VII-2, his 3rd foal Favory VII-3 and so on. All his foals were branded with F7 on the back, with their own foal number, so you could identify an individual horse immediately. No confusion possible. Very practical in a large studfarm!
If let's say, the 32nd foal of Favory VII (yes, indeed: Favory VII-32), would be selected as breeding stallion for that studfarm, he would be registered with the next available Roman number in that register, let's say Favory XI. Mares, selected to become brood mare of the stud received an additional studbook number, and were not renamed, and did not get a traditional female Lipizzaner name! Practical identification in a large herd was the main issue. So a daughter of Favory VII (his 22nd child, so registered as Favory VII-22) could become broodmare of the stud with the studbook entry "name" as 123 Favory VII.
So far no confusion, if it was done within one single studfarm. But after 1918, after the collapse of the Austrian empire, several new countries took over the heritage of breeding Lipizzaner. And they all started their own "Favory-register as well..... So there is a Favory XXV ín Szilvasvarad, in Sambata de Jos, as well in the other studfarms which use(d) this system, which are DEFINITELY NOT THE SAME STALLION !! Very confusing for modern Lipizzaner studbook database designers ;-)
And then the most confusing: the renaming in every single stud of specific stallion! When 321 Favory Dubovina-4 (Piber 1964) went to Szilvasvarad, he was registered as the 25th Favory stallion in the Hungarian studbook: Favory XXV. And years later, when Favory Allegra XXVI (Lipica) went to Szilvasvarad, he was the 28th Favory overthere: Favory XXVIII.
But... if one of these stallions would go to f.e. Sambata, then he may became Favory XXXIX, because at that moment he would be the 39th Favory stallion in the Romanian studbook... Although he was Favory XXVIII in Szilvasvarad, and Favory Allegra XXVI in Lipica or Piber.
So the confusing part started after WW I. But before that, in imperial times, it was a very practical and logical registration system. And it still is, when you would use it only in one specific studfarm.
PS A series of Lipizzaner books is foreseen and in preparation. My first part possibly will be the Hungarian and Romanian Lipizzaner breed. Hopefully in 2011 !!
As soon as a stallion enters the SRS, he is registered in the main register. It will receive an additional number in the front (the next open number in the register). If there might be already a stallion with that name (a full- or half-brother), Roman numbers are added behind the name. The foal-number from Piber disappears.
So: -Favory Dubovina-4 was his birth name in Piber -He was the 321st stallion in the SRS, so in Vienna he became 321 Favory Dubovina -After him a second Favory Dubovina appeared (a full or half brother, or even a relative furhter away) so "our" 321 Favory Dubovina became 321 Favory Dubovina I in Vienna. Or simply F.Dubovina I - With his return in Piber as a breedingstallion, his name was 321 Favory Dubovina-4 again. This name can be found in Piber pedigrees. - In Lipica his foal name Favory Dubovina-4 was taken over, but mistakenly as Favory Dubovina IV. This name can be found in Lipica pedigrees and in the ILR. - In Szilvasvarad he was renamed according to the Hungarian studbook as Favory XXV
Yes, I believe the one I added Today is the sire of your C. Dagmar. But let's wait for Atjan to confirm - he is by far better source of info than me ;)
