Lipizzan Longevity

We are discussing Lipizzan longevity -- how long they live and can work -- in our Lipizzaner group that we would like to post here for a more definitive answer:

On average, how long do the Lipizzans at the SRS stay working?
Do most of them work into their 20s?
On what grounds are they retired?

Thanks,
Eileen

  2. Grounds -- basis, hrm, in other words, "what are the determining factors that lead to their retirement".

    Thanks, Andreas!

  3. Do the older stallions get special foods and consideration?

  4. Isn't it refreshing to hear that the horses at the SRS remain sound well into their elder years!! That seems to be a rare thing in todays show dressage world! Most of our wonderful horses are lame by age 12 from improper work and forced training methods. horseperson

  6. Age . . . as in they can no longer preform as well as they did? Are the stallions given "lighter" jobs so that they can continue to perform, or are they retired as soon as they can no longer do their "regular" jobs?

Not gonna ask about foods and stuff again. I have the feeling you're not supposed to talk about that :)

  7. The feed for old stallions is the same as for the other stallions.
Yes, if the rider feels the stallion isn't strong enough any more to do the work that's the time to retire.
