This is a picture of the Lipica ridingschool in the 70-ies. I do not know all names of the riders, but some. The names of the stallions are very difficult, because they had a lot stallions available for the performance in those times.
From the left (on the picture) 1) Edi ... 2) Stojan Moderc 3) Ladislav Fabris 4) Klavdij Maver 5) Alojz Lah 6) 7) 8) Dusan Maver
O yes, I stayed many times in Hotel Maestoso in Lipica. In ancient times (Yugoslavia!) and in modern times (Slovenia now) as well.
It used to be such a typical quadrangle concrete building, which was the habit in ancient times in Central Europe. But it was redecorated some years ago, with a pleasant luxury.
This is really an old picture, around 1970 I guess. I have seen these faces on other pictures as well, but I do not have names for you. The rider left was later a carriage driver. I have never seen him riding myself. I forgot his name, I fear.

Hi Andreas! Yes, that was my first impression too. The brand is definitely not European Lipizzan. And in his type this horse is also not so typical Lipizzan.
The brand on the left thigh indicates a PRE (Andalusian). But perhaps it is a Lipizzaner after all. The brand looks like a crowned H. Herrmann's ??
Thank you both for your help!!! I never knew about Herrmann's branding his horses. This card does not indicate it is Foreign. It is a simple card on Ilford Paper (A Canadian Company). I will write Herrmanns.

Sure. The national stud Topolcianky (nowadays Slovakia) was founded in 1921, with original breeding stock of imperial Lippiza.
Piber and Italian Lipizza (note the change in spelling!) were focused on the breeding of greys, but Topolcianky always tried to maintain the colors within their breed. So they deliberately used non-grey stallions (blacks, browns) in their breeding since 1921. And involved colored brood mares as well. Due to their selection criteria, color varieties remained in Topolcianky, although they are based on the same imperial blood like nowadays Piber and Monterotondo (Italy).
Sometimes Topolcianky used non-grey stallions out of their own breed. But because "colored" Lipizzaner are commonly in the minority, it is very hard to find stallions of a accepted quality. So if they did not have one themselves, they looked for a suitable one in the other traditional state studs. Like (in the old times) Bábolna and Szilvasvarad (both Hungary). Or in Djakovo (Croatia)
Because of their interest in non-greys, due to their selection also 'specialties" remained... In average once in 25 years a dunn, non-grey Lipizzaner is born ! It is still in the genes there...
And that is the reason why the colt Conversano Spadiglia, of this year in Piber, has this color too (with the grey-factor though, I fear...): his mom came from Topolcianky!
I have been looking for this photo for a few years. It shows the opening of the Grand Quadrille during the making of the Disney Movie. Hopefully it can help me with more identifications.
Andreas, Thank you Thank you for the ID on this beautiful stallion & Rider. Does the stallion master the Courbette in hand and then move on to the rider? How long does this training take?
Thank you so much. Check out the next picture I sent. I have never seen one like this before. Hopefully somebody can tel me who is and the stallion.
Hi Andreas, I am really excited about this photo. It is from the same batch of photos in the #1 Photo Album. From the 1920-30's. This guy is wearing stirrups, his legs have no contact, and he is behind the girth. I sent Romy a scan of the back. This was an original 3x5 postcard that has been cut down. I purchased it from a dealer in England, because I had never seen anything like this. I am hoping that some one else might have this photo and can help out. The stallion seems comfortable. He is riding the snaffle only. I don't see any contact on the curb.
Remember I sent a bunch of photos that are in album 1 of this same type only all the riders are in uniform. This one is just so odd.
Wonderful picture Andreas...he looks very much like my Favory Stallion...(Favory II Candita). Of course I have never seen him do a coubette, but will levade and croupade when at play or when he wants show off...
Hey Andreas...I never realized that in a capriole the horse lands with his front feet in the same position as in take off...is that correct? I saw my mare do 3 in a row last fall...She was guarding her hay pile! Oh and I rode my first involuntary Cap as my mare encountered a black and white cow...fireworks were fine with her that day, but the black and white cow was gonna eat her. She caprioled away from the cow...I stuck but what what a lot of power! My daughter was quite impressed that her old mom stuck...we played with the cow quite a bit till she was over that little threshold! She really is a good mare...that was our first time out away from the arena....
Ahh...I will have to look to see if she lands will all 4's then...Does the cap jar your back much? I guess you have some tricks that you learn to keep that from happening. Your roughout saddles and cantles certainly must helo too. Do the SRS Stallions get hacked out much? By the way your english is very good! Thank goodness for you and Mr Hop, otherwise we Americans would be so stinking ignorant of this very noble breed.
I bet! Thanks for the Tip Andreas...and maybe one day I may have the gumption to take a lesson with you..You all at the SRS have such a great reputation, I would probably be too nervous in my Natural Horsemanship ways! Silly me, I like to dance with my girls at liberty. I tell you what come to Idaho anytime and you can relax in our mountains....Do you happen to Snow Ski? Skiing keeps me in great shape to ride in our wintery off season...I am starting to pick out riders when I see folks ski...Of course Austria has fantastic skiing too....(I teach skiing in the wintertime) One other question..has anyone ever thought to do a family type movie about a person who aspires to the SRS? If its done you could make a bundle of money..Do you realize how horse crazy we are in the US? We would go nuts about a SRS movie....I know commercializm does not mix with art but hey, someone has to pay the bills!

During a performance, do you use the pictures on the walls to spot yourself when doing the airs? Just wondering how the choreagraphy is figured out. Also are the shows different? Or is it the same for the whole season? And do show vary from season to season?
Wow...all of that equipment on his head...I have no idea what most of that stuff is other than the side reins...And is that a cradle bridle on him? At least thats what we call it here in the US?
There's a bridle, caveson, a so called "Pilarenhalfter" (halter for the pilars), side-reins for the horse, side-reins for the pilars and a short (white) hand-rein.

No, C.Roviga was born in 1971, so he is not alive anymore. He was ridden by 1st OB Ignaz Lauscha in All Movements, Quadrille and the Solo (I saw them live in Vienna in 1983, and have a video of their last Solo in 1985 in the Wiener Stadthalle). C.Roviga was also ridden by OB Hans Riegler, and he ended his career on Long Rein with 1st OB Norbert Tschautscher.
There is some frozen semen left, though ;-) But not for commercial purposes!
If this is the right C. Mara, Lipizzan registry says:
573 Conversano Mara-35 (P-1998) sired by 414 C. Mantua (P-1978) from 81 Mara (T-1990) by 204 C. VI Gaetana (T-1982), from unknown dam. C. Mantua line is predominantly from Piber (and earlier Lipica) with individual predecessors from Stancic, Vukovar, Djakovo, Eltz and Radautz), while sire of his dam Mara (C. VI Gaetana) originates from Topolcianky with one predecessor from Lipica, one from Piber and one from Lipik.
Yes, this is 573 Conversano Mara, sired by 414 C.Mantua. The dam 81 Mara was born in the Slovakian National Stud Topolcianky, of course with a full pedigree. The ILR is not complete here.
And no, this is not the Croatian mare familiy "Margit". Her dam was 460 Clea (Topolcianky, 1984). It concerns marefamily "Deflorata"

AntwortenLöschenCould this possibly be a photo of Charles Harris, who was a student of the Spanish Riding School under Col. Podhajsky during 1948-1951?
AntwortenLöschenNo, this definitely is a picture from the 20-ies or 30-ies.
AntwortenLöschenDoes anybody recognize this stallion?
AntwortenLöschenHi Andreas, Could this be C Roviga? Can you look again. I found the same information Atjanh did. Is this Stallion still alive?
AntwortenLöschenThanks
Marcia
I think this is Neapolitano Strana, but I am not sure.
AntwortenLöschenI have no idea! N. Strana? maybe ......
AntwortenLöschenThe first one is Edvard MAVEC and the last is Dušan MAVEC.
AntwortenLöschenthe riders are: Ivo Umek, Alenka Keršič and Edmund Seražin
AntwortenLöschenThanks Canissa. A mistyping of Dusan's name! And Edi's family name I could not remember!
AntwortenLöschenNo problem!
AntwortenLöschenIt is not easy to see, but if I'm not mistaken:
AntwortenLöschen6) Marjan Turk (may be wrong, can't see the face well)
7) Bogdan Rener (Chief Carriage driver in Lipica nowadays)
Wow, superb photo!
AntwortenLöschenNo, C.Roviga was born in 1971, so he is not alive anymore.
AntwortenLöschenThere is some frozen semen left, though ;-) But not for commercial purposes!
I have that video from 1985 as well, though in bad quality, but really very very good performance. All of it!
AntwortenLöschenAndreas, is my assumption correct for this exercise: the main person is standing behind the horse and the one in front is assisitng him/her?
AntwortenLöschenDoes anyone have an idea where to get those brass hooks? I'd love to make me one of these, but have no clue where to buy the brass stuff...
AntwortenLöschenTotally right Sandi!
AntwortenLöschenThe saddler in the SRS and Spirig might know.
AntwortenLöschenSiglavy Capriola?
AntwortenLöschenDo you still have a saddler in SRS? I thought this position was cancelled?
AntwortenLöschenOK, I'll ask Mr. Siprig, thanks!!
Romy, I would greatly appreciate a copy, if possible. My mailing address is: 12 Foxwin Lane, Elmira, NY 14901. Thanks! Pat Ross
AntwortenLöschenYes, we still do have a saddler. His name is Ali Kanyücel.
AntwortenLöschenI figured it in the mean time, but thanks a lot anyway :))
AntwortenLöschengraceful as ever
AntwortenLöschenAre C. Mara croatian breed?, His parents?
AntwortenLöschenGood question, C. Mara is definitely born in Piber, his sire is Conversano Mantua (SRS). Don't know anything about his dam.
AntwortenLöschenIf this is the right C. Mara, Lipizzan registry says:
AntwortenLöschen573 Conversano Mara-35 (P-1998) sired by 414 C.
This is what I can find in the mentioned Lipizzanregistry at: http://www.lipizzanregistry.com/ILRegister/ILRegister.html?locale=sl_SI
I cannot guarantee the info is correct and complete though. And I am pretty sure Piber Stud has more accurate pedigree...
Yes, this is 573 Conversano Mara, sired by 414 C.Mantua. The dam 81 Mara was born in the Slovakian National Stud Topolcianky, of course with a full pedigree. The ILR is not complete here.
AntwortenLöschenAnd no, this is not the Croatian mare familiy "Margit". Her dam was 460 Clea (Topolcianky, 1984). It concerns marefamily "Deflorata"
