I think the first two photos (Ernst Lindenbauer, and Wenzel Zrust with EL) were taken in Olympia in London during an SRS tour to England in the 1920s or 30s. So perhaps the caption for the third photo (of Johann Neumayr? in levade - or courbette? should that near hind be leaving the ground!?) should read "Preparing for Olympia" and was mistranscribed by someone who didn't realize Olympia is a show venue in London! Are these from a US photo archive? That might explain the mistake - unless the SRS gave a display at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. I don't recall reading that anywhere , though of course Col. Podhajsky won his medal in Berlin. The third photo doesn't look to have been taken in Vienna - and the steel girder thingy in the background does suggest Olympia (very ugly, rather Crystal-Palace type building).
I think you are right, it probably should be "Olympia". It looks like the stallion lost his balance in Levade, maybe. The angle of the horse does not look high enough for a Courbette.
Marcia sent me the last 5 foto's. This is what she said about them:
>I have no information on these, except they were sent to me by a person in >Germany who was going to throw them away!
>lip28, 30, 32 are just mare & foal cards. Might be Piber I don't know.
>lip 29 & 31 are much more interesting. Both of these are contact prints. >They were made right from the negatives, Age? Hostau? The Lipizzaner side >view, everybody is smiling, must be a reason. The Lipizzaner front view, >there is a unseen man pointing to the rear leg.
>Anybody want to comment on these wonderful old photos!
The dark mares are warmbloods. Till around 1980 they brad also warmbloods beside Lipizzans in Piber. The warmbloods were old austrian breeds, for example Furioso, Nonius, Gidran and Przedswit.

Foto's added for Marcia; Rider Lauscha on S. Morella and Podhajsky on C.Soja.
Marcia's notes-- "This is Rider Lauscha on Siglavy Morella. Note behind horse is James Franciscus and Lily Taylor. Photos were taken seconds apart, trying to catch the Courbette off the ground. Andreas, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the rider's position is perfect."
"These postcards are Conversano Soja and Podhajsky. Note, "Chain of Pearls" Each horse should be right behind the next. The walking photo is a group of 4 and they would be "mirroring" the group at the other end. Can anybody ID the horse or rider behind Podhajsky? "
No, much later. The Disney-movie was released in 1963. So these pictures must have been earlier. Col.Podhajsky is riding 203 Conversano IV Soja here - he was born in 1952.
The postcards I am sharing are from the Movie and only the movie made in 1962/63. These postcards are identified by the uniforms and the banners along the wall. They used at least 2 performances and probably many short filming and cut work. 2 different stallions are ridden by Podhasjky. They are M. Alea I and S. Soja. As I keep sending postcard scans I will note the differences for everybody to see. As I stated, I believe some of the photos were taken behind the cameras during the filming. The platform used for filming was HUGE. Because they did not want tracks in the ground, the wheels are against both sides of the Riding Hall.
When Robert Taylor enters the hall, you can almost see the shadows of the cameras.
Added more foto's, starting with the foto labeled 28-SRS-600. The foto's labeled "1980's", I don't know if they are from the '80s, that is how they were labeled.
Added lots of great new foto's from Marcia. Starting from foto labeled "List 2.1"
Here are Marcia's notes on each foto:
list 2.1--- 2 great photos of Hans Irbinger and Pluto Brezia
list 3--Podhajsky & Favory Brezia
list 5--This is Pluto Brezia. Handler is either Irbinger or Podhajsky. I question this because of the height of the Man. Podhajsky was taller than Irbinger.
list 6--Podhajsky and Neapolitano Santuzza. Podhajsky said this was the best horse at the Capriole and was never jumped under saddle.
list 7--Hans Irbinger & Neapolitano Ancona. Note this stallion is NOT in the movie. It has been edited out OR never been in the film. Apparently the Disney editors don't know how important a brown horse is during the performance. I can tell you that if Walt Disney was aware of this, this stallion would have been in the film. Walt always wanted accuracy if it was important. I have BEGGED the Disney archives to view this footage but they won't let me.
list 8--This is a very important postcard. It is the only one I have found that shows Podhajsky entering the hall. In order front to back Podhajsky on Maestoso Alea I Josef Riedler on Siglavy Bona (I love this stallion!) Irbinger on ????????? Does anybody know? Earnst Bachinger on Pluto Wanda (I love his ears, they are always pointed back)
list 9--Josef Riedler and Pluto Presciana I
list 10--Podhajsky & C. Soja. That mane really stands out. Great photo, real b/w.
list 11--Both postcards are the same performance. The same first 4 horses appear in both cards. Notice the top card is 12 Riders (Grand Quadrille, is that correct Andreas?) Bottom card is 8 riders but the first 4 riders are again the same. I still need the horse ID'ed for Irbinger. Anybody?
list 12--Again 2 of these postcards show the same horses and riders in the first 4 positions. On the single of Podhajsky, can anybody recognize the other riders or horses?
list 13--I believe these two postcards are also the same group. It is hard for me the see if that is S. Bona behind Podhajsky. The ID on the top card remains the same. S. Bona is behind Podhajsky Now the bottom card is harder This is what I have From Left Hans Irbinger Hubert Eichinger Herbert Irbinger Jr. From the right Karl Mikolka Wolfgang Dellefont Ignaz Lauscha Norman Tschautcher Can anybody help with the horses? That program would be wonderful! I didn't even know a program was printed for this filming.
list 14--I scanned this one alone because it is different than the others. I see Podhajsky on the left. Can anybody help with the others?
list 15--I have the riders Left to right as: Dellefont, Irbinger & Tschautsher. Can anybody help with the horses?
list 16--This is the only postcard I have of the change of horses and line up. Is Podhajsky on M Alea I? This almost looks like Pluto T. The nose looks to pink. S. Bona looks to be the 3rd horse. Anybody able to help with ID's?
list 19--I believe this order is the same Pluto Wanda's ears are GREAT!
list 21--All 4 of these postcards are very slightly different. This is the last group from the Movie. I found many duplicates in the bunch.
I loved sharing, I love my collection. Thanks to everybody for your help and knowledge. You won't be forgotten if I can ever get this put together.
Andreas I was there of course. The first time a performance of the SRS in Friesland !!! I'm great fan of the SRS :-) . We worked sometimes for the Friesian studbook. After the performance of SRS two day's there was the show of the Friesian horse we're at that moment stablemanager. But your performance with Conversano Dagmar long reins was so great !!! After see that i try to work with my horse long reins. And found a new passion, thank you very much Andreas and C. Dagmar :-) !!!!
I think it is the same time and place as the first 2 foto's. Paeroa thought it looked like Olympia in London. I think he is right, but obviously outside the arena itself. It looks like Ernst Lindenbauer and Wenzel Zrust are in the line up in this foto, also.
No, I did not see this picture before. But according to the architecture style of the buildings in the background, I could imagine that it is London. We should check if the SRS went to London in 1936. I do not know this by head, I fear... (sorry for that ;-)
New foto--Quadrille--from Marcia -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the Grand Quadrille. I am guessing the date to be 1940's. Can somebody else help with the age. Can you help with the riders. I don't think that is Podhajsky in the lead, so it might be 30's. Where was it taken?
I think that's Ernst Lindenbauer in the lead. It might be at Lainzer Tiergarten - there were quite a few outdoor photos taken there before the School left Vienna during the war. Maybe that's Johann Neumayr with an Oberbereiter's saddlecloth at no. 2? If so (and it's a wild guess), that would make it between about 1942-1944.
I rescaled the original image to a much larger view, but it is too large to put on Multply. If anyone would like to see it, I can email it to them. I can email a larger version of any of the foto's here should someone want them.
I added new foto's, starting from 'broodmares'. The riders I know, I put their names. Podhajsky's foto, I don't know where it was taken. If anyone wants copies, email me.
Maestoso Bonavoja-45. Born Piber 1967 (sire: M.IX Ancona - dam: 8 Bonavoja) - sold to Lipica - Fully trained by Alojz Lah (here on the picture)
For many many years used in the performances in and outside Lipica. On long rein and in Levade. Very friendly and reliable stallion!
Founder of the present Maestoso-line in Lipica. Sire of the famous Grand Prix price winner Maestoso Montenegra and also of Maestoso Allegra. Both competed during the Olympics in LA 1984.
I must be getting OLD! I didn't even see you. Andreas! I am sorry, of course it is you and Isabella. Sorry..... That did not look like you UNTIL now....
That is Maestoso Bonavoja-45 again ! (Piber 1967 - Sire: M.IX Ancona) Together with his trainer Alojz Lah. (See their other picture of his Long Rein performance)
Siglavy Bona is the beautiful young grey behind Podhajsky in most of the scenes in the Disney Movie. He has matured beautifully. Is there a date to this photo?
That's correct. This is picture from the 60-ies. It is Klavdij Maver. Very likely on Favory Dubovina (Lipica, 1959), which was his star horse for many years till the beginning of the 80-ies.
You might be right. But it could be a picture after a pleasant night with a lot of wine ?? ;-) Nevertheless, it looks like Klavdij somehow, don't you think?
I always see this corridor from this perspective, what's there on the left on the other side of the passages? And how do you manage to warm up in here?
It's one stripe. But on the next pic there is also only one and there is Chief Rider Meixner on the pic. Based on the age of the rider here I assume this must have been either a Rider or even a Chief Rider... Is it possible that in those days the stripes had different meaning or something similar??
We still have this uniform and were supposed to wear it at a reception with Emperor Akihito in Tokyo! Originally a Gala-uniform from Habsburg times, it was "reactivated" in the 60s when Walt Disney shot the movie "Miracle of the White Stallions".
OK, till now I admired you people at SRS. From now on... actally there is no words to describe it! I don't imagine to warm up a horse this way (which only prooves the misery of my riding and the very need for my further deep humbleness...!!!
Andreas wrote "though there are some of the same kind"
Indeed there are! In fact, there are 2 very similar photos in his book "Complete Training of Horse and Rider" (See photos 15 Extended Trot and 18 Passage in that book). I always wondered why he selected them to be in the book, especially the extended trot photo
Someone on another forum indicated that in the Berlin 1936 Olympics the levade was a required movement. I do know that the canter pioroutte was included for the first time, but the levade?
Colonel Hans Handler was from 1964 till 1974 director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, replacing Colonel Alois Podhajsky. On June 8, 1966 Colonel Handler, Sekt.-Chef Dr. Ferdinand Ott, Sekt.-Chef Dr. Fritz Meznik and General August Rüling founded the "Gesellschaft der Freunde der Spanischen Hofreitschule". If it is indeed Col. Hans Handler in the right ( moving out the picture) this photo must have been taken before his sudden death in 1974
The foto marked "preparing for the Olympics" was labeled that way when I got it. Don't really know why.
AntwortenLöschenI think the first two photos (Ernst Lindenbauer, and Wenzel Zrust with EL) were taken in Olympia in London during an SRS tour to England in the 1920s or 30s. Colonel Handler - Siglavy Bona
AntwortenLöschenSiglavy Bona is the beautiful young grey behind Podhajsky in most of the scenes in the Disney Movie. He has matured beautifully. Is there a date to this photo?
AntwortenLöschenDoes anybody know who the horse & rider are? I believe is was taken in Lipica.
AntwortenLöschenThanks to all for your help.

AntwortenLöschenChief Rider Krzisch and Siglavy Mantua I
AntwortenLöschenRider Rostek and Neapolitano Nima I
AntwortenLöschenThat's correct. This is picture from the 60-ies. It is Klavdij Maver. Very likely on Favory Dubovina (Lipica, 1959), which was his star horse for many years till the beginning of the 80-ies.
AntwortenLöschenThank you very much for all your help. Another card down. Thank you!
AntwortenLöschenMarcia
I've seen their solo in 2003 in Schönbrunn - that was so amazing :))
AntwortenLöschenI dare to doubt this is Klavdij Maver.
AntwortenLöschenI doubt this is Klavdij Maver. In the 60s he was younger than the man on the picture.
AntwortenLöschenOberbereiter Gottlieb Polak
AntwortenLöschenDo you still have these gala uniforms at the SRS? I never see them in use anymore..
AntwortenLöschenYou might be right. But it could be a picture after a pleasant night with a lot of wine ?? ;-)
AntwortenLöschenNevertheless, it looks like Klavdij somehow, don't you think?
I always see this corridor from this perspective, what's there on the left on the other side of the passages? And how do you manage to warm up in here?
AntwortenLöschenIt's one stripe. But on the next pic there is also only one and there is Chief Rider Meixner on the pic. Based on the age of the rider here I assume this must have been either a Rider or even a Chief Rider... Is it possible that in those days the stripes had different meaning or something similar??
AntwortenLöschenWe still have this uniform and were supposed to wear it at a reception with Emperor Akihito in Tokyo! Originally a Gala-uniform from Habsburg times, it was "reactivated" in the 60s when Walt Disney shot the movie "Miracle of the White Stallions".
AntwortenLöschenTo be honest I'm not sure if this photo is an original. I think someone redid the photo. It's definitely one stripe.
AntwortenLöschenOn the left are small niches, big enough for two horses to place there and wait to be mounted. In those niches we turn when warming up.
AntwortenLöschenSo you basically warm up the horses by going up and down the corridor? That's it?
AntwortenLöschenSo you basically warm up the horses by going up and down the corridor? That's it?
AntwortenLöschenWe walk, trot and canter up and down. We passage, piaffe and do tempi-changes up to one-tempi-changes.
AntwortenLöschenWe do shoulder and haunches in :-)
OK, till now I admired you people at SRS. From now on... actally there is no words to describe it! I don't imagine to warm up a horse this way (which only prooves the misery of my riding and the very need for my further deep humbleness...!!!

AntwortenLöschen"though there are some of the same kind"
Indeed there are! In fact, there are 2 very similar photos in his book "Complete Training of Horse and Rider" (See photos 15 Extended Trot and 18 Passage in that book). I always wondered why he selected them to be in the book, especially the extended trot photo
He is human, or, he has a sense of humor ? Looks to me as if he was making a correction at the time the shot was taken.
AntwortenLöschenOnly the white horses roll !! lol ! (mom's)
AntwortenLöschenSo beautiful I could cry !
AntwortenLöschen"old austrian breeds, for example Furioso, Nonius, Gidran and Przedswit."
AntwortenLöschenThe Breeds are still being bred in Hungary and Romania.
Right, Przedswit, Furioso and Nonius were brad in Piber!
AntwortenLöschenIs there a formula that you use of shavings per square foot ??
AntwortenLöschenWe don't use this kind of footing anymore. This photo is a couple of years old!
AntwortenLöschenSomeone on another forum indicated that in the Berlin 1936 Olympics the levade was a required movement. I do know that the canter pioroutte was included for the first time, but the levade?
AntwortenLöschenNever heard that!
AntwortenLöschenAlfred Cerhaj war ein gebürtige Ungar.Er war sehr befreundet mit die Bereiter der Ungarische Spanische Reitschule Imre Magyar und Andras Bondor.
AntwortenLöschenColonel Hans Handler was from 1964 till 1974 director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, replacing Colonel Alois Podhajsky.
AntwortenLöschenOn June 8, 1966 Colonel Handler, Sekt.-Chef Dr.
