Ysbrand Chardon switches to Lipizzaners

Finally.... he saw the light

"Dutch top driver IJsbrand Chardon will from now on compete with Lipizzaner horses in the FEI World Cup Driving competitions. The four times World Champion bought three horses of his fellow competitor Jozsef Dobrovitz from Hungary right after the World Cup competition in Stuttgart this weekend"

  2. He said that he bought the 3 best Lipizzaner horses of Jozsef Dobrovitz and I know that at this moment Chardon is in France looking for a 4th Lipizzaner at Benjamin Aillaud. Chardon worked with the 3 Lipizzaner horses in 2007 for the first time and haven't forgotten them. (funny how that works with de Lipizzaners!!)
I don't know the pedigree but the names are Incitato I-32, Fegyenc (Maestoso) and Magus (Maestoso).

I don't know how to get a picture here so you can see them by clicking ;-)

  3. Like Regine said, the Lipizzaners are called Maestoso X-30 Magus, Maestoso Fegyenc, Incitato-I-32. I will try to trace them in the studbooks.

    Their names indicate:
    Maestoso X-30 (Magus): Topolcianky
    Maestoso Fegyenc: Hungarian private breed
    Incitato I-32: Romanian

I had several emails and phone calls today: here in Holland people are really excited that he bought Lipizzaners! It is a great challenge for promotion of the Lipizzaner breed over here!

  4. Of course Atjan, I'm very excited too that this man now owns 3 Lipizzaners and maybe soon 4. What do you think is coming when Chardon keeps ending up at the number one positions! And don't forget... next to the 4 Lipizzaners of Geert de Brauwer who also belongs to the four in hand driving top. That's 8 Lipizzaners who will show really great performances! I'm glad that it is all over the news because I also received some phone calls, let's say it's the talk of the day :)

  5. I'd be really interested to hear what you find about their breeding. My horse was bred at a private stud in Hungary, I have his six generation pedigree at home, we could compare notes... ;-)

  6. I spoke to Mr Chardon last night. He is really exited about his new horses. And is really surprised what an impact his decision has, in Holland, in Hungary, in the equestrian world.

Maestoso X-30 (Magus) is a half brother of Maestoso X-28 (Fegyen). Both are bred by the Slovakian (!) state stud Topolcianky, and are sons of their famous breeding stallion Maestoso X Mahonia. Both were born in 2000.

The dam of Maestoso X-30 is 541 Bosna (sire: Conversano XXIII, Szilvasvarad)
The dam of Maestoso X-28 is 511 Greta (sire: Conversano IV Tropea)

His third Lipizzaner is Incitato I-30 (a.k.a.Illm), born in 1996 in the Romanian stud Dalnic. His sire was Incitato I, his dam Siglavy-Capriola XXI-16.

For now the horses will be used together with his Dutch warmbloods. But Mr Chardon told me that he might look around for some more Lipizzaners in future, to complete his team.

  9. Somehow you missed something, Maskenball, if you allow me to say so.. ;-)

Lipizzaners are used for driving as long as they exist. Even more for driving than for (classical) riding. In spite of all romantic ideas about the Lipizzaner, which were the effect of the fame of the Spanish Ridingschool !

The Lipizzaners were always thé transportation aid of the Habsburg nobility in all means. Not only for parade or war-horse under the saddle, but especially for good-looking representative driving pairs, and for long distance junction needs of the imperial court.

Since the driving sports started internationally since 1972, the Lipizzaners always played their role. Especially in the 4-in-hand competition. Indeed the Hungarians were/are quite famous, and became European or World champion several times. Not just one, as you wrote, but several ! Like 4-in-hand champions Sandor Fülöp (1974), Imre Abonyi (1976), György Bardos (1978/1980), Laszlo Juhasz (1984), Zoltan Lázár (2004).

But also drivers with other nationalities (like George Bowman -father and son- of the UK and various drivers from Belgium f.e.) use Lipizzaner horses in the international competition.

The present driving competitions on international level consist of three parts: dressage, marathon and ability test(ninepins). More and more the result of the dressage part has become of more influence on the final result. And the manoeuvrability and endurance within the marathon. And the sensitivity and cooperation within the ability test. All these skills are embedded in the Lipizzaner breed. And therefore the Lipizzaner is ideal for the present driving competition.

Indeed the present Hungarian Lipizzaners are slightly different in their outward appearance than other Lipizzaners. Caused by their larger frame and higher withers height, they are even less suitable for the demands of present driving competition! That is the reason that top drivers like Lazar and Dobrovitz are using horses from Topolcianky (Slovakia) and Romania! And not Hungarian Lipizzaners.
And that is also the reason why the Hungarian state stud Szilvasvarad changed their breeding policy recently, by using breeding stallions from Lipica, Piber and Djakovo.

As I mentioned above, the 3 stallions of Mr. Chardon are not Hungarian. Two of them are bred in Topolcianky, one is originating from Romania.

  10. Thank you Atjan, you have always so much great information!
I would like to mention that the Lipizzaners are doing very well now a days in the sport. In Belgium there is Geert de Brauwer (www.debra.be) who ends up at the International top 5 with his Lipizzaners in 4-in-hand-driving. Geert de Brauwer is riding with Lipizzaner horses for years and also breeds with them. He told once that his dream is to ride at the top with 4 Lipizzaners of his own mares and stallion ... (dont'know the English word for that).
And we must not forget 4-in-hand-driver Benjamin Aillaud from France and his Lipizzaners.

Then... In Holland there are 2 tandem drivers Wil Smits (I don't know a website) and Han Gankema (www.dehoogheacker.nl) with Lipizzaner horses and they both are also preforming at high level (both are klasse 4 international drivers). And both winning the Tandem Champion title more than once!!
Do I need to say that the Lipizzaner horses are the best?!!!

  11. Thanks a lot for explanations, Atjan, interesting.
