L.A. County fire - Lipizzan Connection

The present huge fires in the L.A. County near Tujunga (Angeles National Forest) worry me immensely.

The Lipizzan stud of Ingun Littorin  (www.lipizzanconnection.com) is located in the center of the red area....   3275 Stonyvale Road, Tujunga CA.

Does anyone has more information about the situation overthere, than I can find on the internet??

The number of structures burned by the Station fire has surged to more than 50 as the out-of-control wildfire pushed west and north, officials say.

More than 30 homes, mountain cabins and other buildings were destroyed when the fire swept through the hamlet of Stonyvale in Tujunga Canyon. Earlier officials had said 21 homes were lost, mostly in remote areas in Tujunga Canyon and south of Acton.

[Updated, 8:20 p.m.: An earlier version of this story said 74 structures had been lost. Fire officials now say the losses stand at more than 50 but that the number may grow as they survey more damage in the canyon.]

The fire showed little sign of slowing down this afternoon as it threatened 12,000 homes in suburban tracts and desert communities, along with a historic observatory and major array of television and radio transmission towers.

“The fire is headed just about anywhere it wants to,” said Mike Dietrich, an incident commander with the Forest Service. “This is a very angry fire. Until we get a change in the weather conditions, I am not overly optimistic.”

  1. Atjan, according to a post on the Lipizzaner list from another Lipizzan breeder in the area, there have been some buildings lost, and all their hay and shavings and tools have burned, but it appears the Lipizzans are safe, as are the humans. Some horses (not the Lipizzans???) and other animals are apparently still there but are being cared for.

It's late at night in this time zone (I'm one state over from them). There should be more information by morning our time.

I'm sure they will greatly appreciate that you're thinking of them. As are we all.

I sold a Lipizzan cross to a lady in that area, had feared he was still with his trainer--the fire lines are right at the gate of that farm, and the horses have been evacuated--but he is safe at his owner's home in the Hollywood Hills.

  2. Thank you Judy. We will wait and see. I tried to contact her, hoping for good news.

  3. According to a friend of Ingun's who posted on a Lipizzan listserve, they managed to evacuate most of the horses. It is unknown at this time whether the farm's buildings have survived, or which horses had to be left. Ingun is off line right now, understandably.

  4. According to the map of the fire perimeter from the LA Times they are right in the middle of it. Hope this link works.

Their address is shown as the orange circle.

Good to hear they've gotten the Lipizzans to safety. These fires are incredibly frightening.

  5. Atjan-- here is the website for the California Dept. of Forestry and Fire --this link should take you directly to the current incident report on the Station fire and will give the perimeter of the evacuation area. http://inciweb.org/incident/article/9357/ I heard a news report about an hour ago-- the firefighters are facing Santa Ana wind conditions, which means the whole picture can change hour to hour. Let's pray for some rain, or at least for the wind to blow the fire back on itself--

  6. Atjan-- here is a website for Pierce College, which is sheltering around 88 horses from the fire zone-- perhaps your friend is there-- there are numbers posted on the website. ehttp://www.piercecollege.edu/webapps/news/viewarticle.asp?ID=1213

  7. Thank you all for your contributions. I tried to reach her, but no contact. (Which is understandable under the circumstances, of course). However, the messages about the situation around Stonyvale Road, Tujunga are quite depressing....

  8. This morning the news just reported the fire is 22% contained. Which is better than a few days ago when it was considered 0% contained.

If you look at this picture gallery, you will see on picture nr. 30 how Stonyvale Road looks like now....

  10. Ingun replied !!

She, Barbara and all horses are ok. Only conjunctivitis from all the smoke and a few kick burises.

On Saturday, of the 31 horses, 12 were evacuated immediately as the fire came roaring through the ranch.... . They had to leave, but Saturday evening they were able to go in again, and evacuate 12 more horses. 7 had to be left behind in a wide open arena, (those who were to difficult to catch under the circumstances, or would not load). They were taken care of by the animal control organization which was allowed to go into the area.

Yesterday they were allowed to go back. The stable survived intact but the main house and all the outside, individual, stalls and several smaller buildings burned...

They got smoke in their eyes, I got tears... reading this... Pfoooh..... what a relieve. And what a mess....

  11. Bless the firefighters! They are working in unbelievable conditions. The temperature in that part California is 100 degress F./ 37-38 C. That plus the heat of the fires is staggering. Many have been working for days with only brief rest times.

Atjan, thank you so for finding out the Lipi's and owners were okay. Houses and barns can be rebuilt. The best ending to a real nightmare situation.

  12. It would be awful enough if the fire had started from natural causes but they are saying this was arson. 2 firefighters have died and their deaths are being called homicides. I just don't understand how humans can be so cruel!
