This is such a wonderful and exciting non-fiction novel !! The guideline of the story is the pedigree of the Lipizzaner stallion from Frank's youth: Conversano Primula (born: Piber, 1967) - a stallion fully trained on Long Rein by his owner Piet Bakker, here in The Netherlands. Every further generation of C.Primula's pedigree offers a different political time area within the 20th century. One ancestor in direct line, Conversano Savona, started his career in the SRS under Habsburg's imperial times, then under the small and poor 1st Austrian republic, then under the Nazi-times. Finally his progeny came under US-protection ! Quite a life experience, you may say ;-)
AntwortenLöschen"Brother Mendel's Perfect Horse" (soon available in English) or 'Das Schicksal der weissen Pferde" (now available in German) is a chronicle of the Lipizzaner horse within the stormy developments and circumstances of the 20th century. It is definitely not a book about horses or Lipizzaner! It is a drawing of human overestimation about the do-ability of nature, packed in an exiting perspective. Also those people who have nothing with horses or Lipizzaner will appreciate it. But it offers a lot of historical backgrounds of the Lipizzaner breed and specific horses of the Spanish Ridingschool, accurately reseached by the author, Frank Westerman. Highly advised !!

AntwortenLöschenI have not read the book and having said that, I surely hope that the movie honors the book and not the Walt Disney's version. Nothing wrong with the Disney version, although we'd like to move on.
Have you read any of Westerman's other books? I think I am going to start with Ararat.

Yes, I did. Several. I really like Frank's way of approach and wide perspective. He shows and denounces without any preconceived opinion. He never gives answers nor opinions nor solutions. He simply observes and describes, and let the reader think. Ararat is also a very special and interesting book! Completely different in assumption and story than "Mendel's Perfect Horse", but not in structure and wideness of perspective. Also very recommendable !
AntwortenLöschenDon't be afraid, the film rights are sold to a very serious, internationally awarded documentary film company. I had already some introducing meetings with several people about the script. I can not tell you more than -again- that it will be a very very interesting story, based on the novel and perspective of Frank Westerman. And just like with Frank, the depth of the research by the film company is impressive.
But just like Frank Westerman's novel, it won't be a documentary film ABOUT the Lipizzaner breed and/or the SRS, but AROUND the Lipizzaner breed, using the Lipizzaner as the leading example of men's elusive tendency to expose power to everything, including nature.

Your account on Ararat brought Tschiffely's Ride to mind when you mentioned that".. he shows and denounces without any preconceived opinion...", although this thought is not intended as comparison between the two books.
I remember the first time this book was mentioned here, it wasn't translated yet to English. It is now, they say, but still not available for sale in the USA, that I know of...
These comments about books about Lipizzaner breed leads my thoughts once again to the wish of someday reading a book written in English, not a translation, about the Lipizzaner breed by an enthusiastic, dedicated, knowledgeable author...

Indeed. I read this review last week. That is to say, the first version. (without the pictures and the intro with reference to General Patton) And I was flabbergasted.
AntwortenLöschenThis is such a nasty review, and completely besides the truth. Everything this Mr. Freund is blaming and accusing Frank Westerman of, applies to himself! He added a lot of information to his review which is not mentioned in this way or context of Frank's book, and is coquetting with this knowledge. However in this exposure he shows that he does not know anything about the true history of the Lipizzaner breed (of which the SRS is only a minor part!). With his comments he shows that he definitely did not understand the deeper story in Frank's book!
This review tells us more about this reviewer Mr. Freund, than about Frank and his book. Regrettably.
