Hester & Pearson perform alongside the Spanish Riding School

The Spanish Riding School of Vienna announce their 60th international tour due to start this year and with only three London dates – tickets for this exclusive event, to be held at Wembley Arena in November 2011 are a must for families, horse lovers and those with an interest in this wonderful Viennese cultural experience.

This year Olympic and Paralympic dressage riders Carl Hester and Lee Pearson are performing a specially choreographed routine prior to the Spanish Riding School’s main event. Watch Carl and Lee's interview with Horse & Country TV here.

It is five years since the majestic, highly trained horses and riders of the 430 year old “High School for Classical Horsemanship” have graced the halls of the UK. Their last tour sold out within days as the opportunity to see the scholars of the Winter Riding School based in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna is a rare occurrence.

Their new show titled “Imperial Dream” sees an impressive display of classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the haute école.

Visitors to the world famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna thrill in the absolute balance and harmony achieved by these beautiful White Lipizzaner stallions and their regal riders. Famed for their in-hand work and movements above the ground such as the Capriole, Levade and Courbette the Imperial Dream Show will feature all the classics but with a difference.

Incredibly moving, highly sophisticated and full of the glamour of Imperial Vienna this is one ticket that lovers of horses and the arts won’t want to miss out on.

Buchpräsentation "Der Lipizzaner im Spiegel der Wissenschaft"

Start:     Apr 11, '11 5:00p
Location:     Spanische Hofreitschule, Michaelerplatz 1, 1010 Wien

The Inco-Copernicus Project

The Inco-Copernicus project commenced after top level discussions in Lipica in 1996.

It is financed bythe European Commission together with:

*The University of Vienna under Professor Brem.
*The University of Ljubljana under Professor Habe.
*The University of Budapest under Professor Bodo.
*The Lipizzan International Federation (LIF).

The aim of the Project is to present a scientifically based description of the phenotypic and genetic structure of the Lipizzan Horse and to recommend the implementation of the results of the Project in future breeding programmes.

The scientific goals are to map the genetic structures of the Lipizzan Breed using:

*DNA markers
*Blood groups
*Polymorphic systems
*Morphologic parameters
*Measurements
*Photographs
*Pedigree data (analysis of inbreeding)
*Health status
*Performance parameters (including reproduction)

During 1996, the first working year of the Project, the Stud Farms of Piber, Lipica, Topolcianky, Simbata de Jos, Beclean, Szilvasvarad and Djakovo were visited by the project team. Blood samples were taken from all Lipizzan horses. They were also measured and photographs were taken to aid in the evaluation of the breed. In the first half of 1998 the Italian Stud farm of Monterotondo was visited and their Lipizzan Horses were evaluated.

The number of Lipizzan Horses analysed by the Project Team were as follows:

*Piber & the Spanish Riding School – 153 Lipizzans
*Lipica – 69 Lipizzans
*Topolcianky – 42 Lipizzans
*Simbata de Jos- 90 Lipizzans
*Beclean – 28 Lipizzans
*Szilvasvarad – 77 Lipizzans
*Djakovo – 64 Lipizzans
*Monterotondo – 63 Lipizzans

The total number of Lipizzan Horses evaluated was 586 breeding animals. Beside this number, 66 Kladrubers were included in the programme from Kladruby and Slatinany.
Role Of The L.I.F.
The LIF has the responsibility of collecting pedigree data of stallion lines and mare families.
It has also provided a detailed history of the breed to assist the Project through its analysis of the development of the Lipizzan. The LIF is also in charge of publishing data and dissemination of the results of data collected.
The European Commission
EC protection of the breed has been given because the Lipizzan Horse is a Paneuropean breed and is part of the heritage of Europe. The Lipizzan numbers are such that a controlled breeding plan is vital if the breed is to prosper for future generations. Our President. Rudolf Leiner is largely responsible for bringing the importance of the Lipizzan to Europe's heritage to the attention of the European Commission and he has worked tirelessly to achieve the success he has had in this.
The data is at present being analysed and Professor Habe has already found one surprising result during his research. The actual degree of inbreeding amongst the overall Lipizzan herd is less than previously thought. Dr Merkens is at present dealing with the possibility of Lipizzans from private breeding herds being included in the concluding presentation of the Copernicus Project.
Further developments, findings, analysis and the eventual conclusion of this major scientific project for the protection of the future of this important European breed will be posted in these pages.

It was notable that the genetic analysis of DNA microsatellites and mt-DNA uncovered several discrepancies between reality and documented in the pedigree. It particularly showed the relatively high proportion (7%) of false motherhood. It was found that this problem occurs mainly in Monterotondo Stud (Italy), where it was examined that every third pedigree was wrong. Difficulties in the identification of foals and mother are probably favored by the accounting system practiced in Monterotondo (grazing in small herds). mt-DNA analysis could also demonstrate that in 28.5% of the studied maternal lines have at least one false origin registered in the studbook.

New book about Working on Long Reins

Recently a very interesting new book was published about the Work on Long Rein, by the German authors Saskia Günzer and Nicole Künzel"Am langen Zügel - Die Krönung der Ausbilding"

With a introduction of Oberbereiter Andreas Hausberger!  And with text contributions of Andreas and representatives of Jerez, Lisbon, Saumur.

Although this book is published in German, it really deserves attention also in the English speaking world!

This highly interesting publication offers a complete survey about this specific part of the Classical Art of Riding. With basic training conditions, exercises from A to Z, Do's and Don'ts. And many very informative pictures, quotes and advises.

The authors emphasize that the Work on Long Rein is additional to riding/training under the saddle. And is, as the subtitle of the book shows: the crowning of the complete training of the horse.
Both authors are experienced riders in the "classical corner", inspired by the 4 Classical Riding Institutions (Vienna, Saumur, Jerez, Lisbon), but also by German ridingmaster Richard Hinrichs.  Both are training for some years now with Andreas Hausberger.

For those among us who do not speak German: please encourage the German publisher Wu Wei Verlag  (www.wu-wei-verlag.com) to provide an English translation!

I assure you: this book will turn into the standard work for Long Rein exercise!

Re: R.I.P. Mr Michael D. Flynn M.V.O. - 30/12/1937 – 02/01/2011

What a privilage it must have been to know this gentlman & even more so to have had opportunity to work beside him ,,, & learn!

"In the early eighties, Micky moved back to light horses and went to work for Alan Bristow near Cranleigh, Surrey, initially to produce and train Alan Bristow’s team for Horse Driving Trails Events, but eventually taking over competing the team of Grey Lipizzaners, and was asked to represent Great Britain at the 1984 World 4-in-hand Driving Championships in Szilvasvarad, Hungary. Also in the GB team was Prince Phillip and George Bowman. Micky had a brilliant championship by coming third in the marathon and he was christened by the Hungarians as the “Flying Flynn”. He finished sixth overall, the highest placed non Hungarian competitor, to help secure the Bronze medal for team GB"

More particulars about his extensive equine career can be found on this website - http://www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk/ - Driving News - Obituary Micky Flynn.

Pegasus TV, Alois Podhajsky at the Spanish Riding School

Just as Atjan said, you're looking for something else and then you find something else...

"A re-discovered 15 minute long film thought lost from the early 1950's which was made for Austria's tourism features rare and unusual footage of the Spanish Riding School and its director, Alois Podhajsky. The horses are absolutely magnificent and the riding superb. The quadrille at the end is not to be missed. Compare the horses and riders with those of today -- 60 years later -- any difference? A terrific mini-doc from out of the past. "
