Performance on long rein:

SRS-Bereiter Herbert Seiberl and the Lipizzaner stallion Siglavy Theodora I represented the Spanish Ridingschool during this year's edition of
"Le Printemps des Ecuyers" in Saumur, France.

During the same weekend the international driving competition (CAI) was held in Saumur.

During the showprogram, an original Austrian imperial Gala Berliner was presented, drawn by 4 Lipizzaners of the Federal Stud of Piber,
driven by Stud Director Dr. Max Dobretsberger and Chief Driver Erwin Movia

The Fédération Française du Lipizzan invited in Saumur by the Cadre Noir and the SRS

The Cadre Noir and the Spanish Riding School of Vienna had invited the President of the Federation Française du Lipizzan, Marie-Françoise Chevallier Le Page and her husband, Michel Le Page, at Saumur this weekend, to celebrate the traditional Printemps des Ecuyers.

Also invited by Colonel Faure, Marc Jalabert accompanied by his lovely friend Anasthasia, had set their appointments, leaving exceptionally the Feria de Nîmes (where his nephew Juan Bautista was to distinguish himself this weekend by being awarded both ears of the bull that he had fought valiantly) to meet with them Mrs. Gürtler, Director of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, and finalize, around a very pleasant breakfast, the contract that will lead this great institution and its legendary Austrian Lipizzaner horses, (but also the Cadre Noir de Saumur, the Royal Andalusian School and the Portuguese School) into the arenas of Arles decorated for the occasion by Christian Lacroix, in late August 2013.
Warmly greeted by Colonel Faure and M. Robert d'Artois, Mr and Mrs Le Page have enjoyed long discussions with breeders, drivers and riders who had come from around the world to applaud the teams of Lipizzaners participating to the Grand International Competition Hitch, once again beautifully organized.

At the Ecole Nationale d'Equitation they also came across few members of the AFL who ran a booth, saw Jean-Marie Le Metayer working his elegant Siglavy Steaka, and congratulated Mr. Jean-Claude Olivier, Vice-President of the Federation Française du Lipizzan, for the beauty of his stallions, as well as the mare and foal he had brought from the «Elfes Blancs» for the occasion.

The representation of Gala du Cadre Noir was, as usual, superbly executed under the direction of Chief Rider Jean-Michel Faure. The Spanish Riding School of Vienna presented with his customary elegance, a great work with long reins from Rider Seiberl with the sparkling Siglavy Theodora I. It was a pleasure to finally see evolving into the great arena of the French Riding School the remarkable team pulled by four magnificent Lipizzaner stallions conducted smoothly and brilliantly by Max Dobrestberger, Director of the National Stud of Piber (Austria) and driver internationally renowned, with his charming wife Andrea, as a groom.

A very nice weekend, very successful.

SRS Kollektion Shop is closed

Hello Everybody,

sad news, it seems that the SRS Kollektion Shop was closed by end of Feb.2011: http://www.srs-kollektion.com/

Due to dubious problems with the SRS corporate management the supplier albion saddlemakers is not able to continue the SRS Kollektion Shop. Being a fan of the Lippizan Horse and the SRS, I find it very disappointing that the management could not overcome these difficulties.

I wrote a request to the SRS Management what alternatives for the purchase of quality horse equipment of the SRS were thought of for the ordinary fan and customer. I did not even get an answer.

Strange though: the SRS Management is trying very hard to change the School into a prospering business but with this kind of customer relationship management it will be a long way...

Vladimir (a.k.a. Waldemar a.k.a. Valdemar) Seunig

Vladimir Seunig, born in Trebnje (germ.: Treffen) in Dolenjska region (Lower Carniola) on 8.8. 1887 to a family of German descent, grew up and for many years lived and trained in Ljubljana. During his time in Ljubljana he was living at Bokalce castle which is nowadays unfortunately in a very bad conditi...on and is falling apart. He was riding his horses at a stadium of Slovenian National Hall and in a riding hall of Kolizej complex in Ljubljana.

He was educated himself at Maria Theresia Military Academy in Vienna, at Spanish Riding School of Vienna and at Care Noir in Saumur. He was one of the last royal stable masters of Europe, for several years serving to Jugoslav king at his stables in Zemono near Belgrade, Serbia. He was also very successful at international competitions. Attended also Olympics in Paris in 1924 where he ranked at 24th place.

Sometime before or during World War II (as far as I know) he left for Germany where he contiued his equestrain career for the rest of his life. Internationally known as Waldemar Seunig he was a respected rider, trainer and international judge. Moreover, he is still one of the best authors of equestrian literature, most famous of his works is an excellent book titled Von der Koppel bis zur Kapriole (Horsemanship). His non equestrian skills include writing short stories and drawing excellent drawings.

He died on Christmas eve of 1976, I believe somewhere in Germany.

SRS Performance Bridles?

Hi Andreas!

I have a couple questions about the double bridles that the School uses for performances:

1.    What are the gold colored snaffle reins made of? How do they get the gold color?

2.    Why do the double bridles have no throatlash/throatlatch (das ist Kehlriemen auf Deutsch, denke ich)

Here’s something for all of us to think about too: Why do we use the word “throat” in naming that strap (in both English and German) when we fasten  it around the horses jaw bone? If anyone knows, please enlighten me! ;-)

Thanks

John

Siglavy capriola @ a education dressage demo!

This weekend i gave a clinic education day about dressage with Siglavy capriola! Ziggy did a perfect job, showing people how to ride dressage by showing how not to do and how to do good! It was a good education for the younger people explaining them about the different between modern dressage and classical! They all prefer Classical at the end of the day :-)))

Buchpräsentation "Der Lipizzaner im Spiegel der Wissenschaft"

Start:     Apr 11, '11 5:00p
Location:     Spanische Hofreitschule, Michaelerplatz 1, 1010 Wien

The Inco-Copernicus Project

The Inco-Copernicus project commenced after top level discussions in Lipica in 1996.

It is financed bythe European Commission together with:

*The University of Vienna under Professor Brem.
*The University of Ljubljana under Professor Habe.
*The University of Budapest under Professor Bodo.
*The Lipizzan International Federation (LIF).

The aim of the Project is to present a scientifically based description of the phenotypic and genetic structure of the Lipizzan Horse and to recommend the implementation of the results of the Project in future breeding programmes.

The scientific goals are to map the genetic structures of the Lipizzan Breed using:

*DNA markers
*Blood groups
*Polymorphic systems
*Morphologic parameters
*Measurements
*Photographs
*Pedigree data (analysis of inbreeding)
*Health status
*Performance parameters (including reproduction)

During 1996, the first working year of the Project, the Stud Farms of Piber, Lipica, Topolcianky, Simbata de Jos, Beclean, Szilvasvarad and Djakovo were visited by the project team. Blood samples were taken from all Lipizzan horses. They were also measured and photographs were taken to aid in the evaluation of the breed. In the first half of 1998 the Italian Stud farm of Monterotondo was visited and their Lipizzan Horses were evaluated.

The number of Lipizzan Horses analysed by the Project Team were as follows:

*Piber & the Spanish Riding School – 153 Lipizzans
*Lipica – 69 Lipizzans
*Topolcianky – 42 Lipizzans
*Simbata de Jos- 90 Lipizzans
*Beclean – 28 Lipizzans
*Szilvasvarad – 77 Lipizzans
*Djakovo – 64 Lipizzans
*Monterotondo – 63 Lipizzans

The total number of Lipizzan Horses evaluated was 586 breeding animals. Beside this number, 66 Kladrubers were included in the programme from Kladruby and Slatinany.
Role Of The L.I.F.
The LIF has the responsibility of collecting pedigree data of stallion lines and mare families.
It has also provided a detailed history of the breed to assist the Project through its analysis of the development of the Lipizzan. The LIF is also in charge of publishing data and dissemination of the results of data collected.
The European Commission
EC protection of the breed has been given because the Lipizzan Horse is a Paneuropean breed and is part of the heritage of Europe. The Lipizzan numbers are such that a controlled breeding plan is vital if the breed is to prosper for future generations. Our President. Rudolf Leiner is largely responsible for bringing the importance of the Lipizzan to Europe's heritage to the attention of the European Commission and he has worked tirelessly to achieve the success he has had in this.
The data is at present being analysed and Professor Habe has already found one surprising result during his research. The actual degree of inbreeding amongst the overall Lipizzan herd is less than previously thought. Dr Merkens is at present dealing with the possibility of Lipizzans from private breeding herds being included in the concluding presentation of the Copernicus Project.
Further developments, findings, analysis and the eventual conclusion of this major scientific project for the protection of the future of this important European breed will be posted in these pages.

It was notable that the genetic analysis of DNA microsatellites and mt-DNA uncovered several discrepancies between reality and documented in the pedigree. It particularly showed the relatively high proportion (7%) of false motherhood. It was found that this problem occurs mainly in Monterotondo Stud (Italy), where it was examined that every third pedigree was wrong. Difficulties in the identification of foals and mother are probably favored by the accounting system practiced in Monterotondo (grazing in small herds). mt-DNA analysis could also demonstrate that in 28.5% of the studied maternal lines have at least one false origin registered in the studbook.
